It has been a little over a year since the world lost one of the greatest hip-hop pioneers of our time, Milton Jerome Powell Jr., professionally known as “Big Pokey”. On Friday, November 29th, in what would have been his 50th birthday, Big Pokey posthumous album was released, Stone Hard to the Boneyard.
A coveted original member of the Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.), Big Pokey was and remains one of the best MC’s to ever grace the City of Houston. Since his debut in 1999 –Hardest Pit in the Litter, to his latest project before his death –Sensei, Big Pokey has been wrecking mics with his clever wordplay mixed with a signature playalistic flow. Breakin boyz off was just what he did, and did so, so effortlessly. Stone Hard to the Boneyard lp is not only a masterpiece, but a gift to the masses that’s sure to go down as a constant reminder of just how throwed he was. Some things never die, and Big Pokey will continue to live through the millions he touched with his pen.
Stone Hard to the Boneyard is 13 banging tracks which is a true compliment to the best to ever do it, Big Pokey. Starting with “Coast 2 Coast” featuring RediMade and Paul Wall, Big Pokey wastes no time gettin to the business with his super tight melodic flow. From there, he runs thru the tracks like a WingStop. Literally, throwin flows out the box like chicken bones! “Fork Talk”, ya betta move ya finger before ya lose a finger…. Killa Kyleon and Big Pokey go ham with the flow, talking about a life that can be achieved as long as you believe. The entire album is fire with features from Slim Thug, Lil’ Keke, Z-Ro, Eddie Coke, Lil’ O, Chris Ward, Mook, Killa Kyleon, Big Third, Mike D, and Daz Dillenger. Big Pokey represented the city and H-Town culture like no other, and we know Clutch City is like nowhere else in the world. Sensei was simply the truth and Podina was guaranteed to rock the arena, fo sho. On track 7 “Gorilla Bizzness” Big Pokey and Big Third paint a vivid picture of raising the trunk, letting the 5th fall, and motherfucking ball to ya fall! Love it Mane, Already…….
The entire album is Big Poyo! Go Support, available on all DSP’s
