“Around the time I began working on this record, production on the Netflix sitcom I was doing with Jamie Foxx was temporarily on hold due to quarantine, so I was really able to focus and pour all of my creative energy into making this song. It gave me pause to really process some emotional baggage that I was carrying and lay it all out on this record” Sami reflects.
That raw vulnerability shines through in every note, elevated by the masterful touch of two-time Grammy-winning platinum producer Brian “Killah B” Bates. Fresh off his recent Album of the Year win for Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, and as the creative force behind “Texas Hold ’Em” and Ariana Grande’s “Positions“, Brian brings a level of sonic brilliance that perfectly complements Sami’s powerhouse vocals. “That man is so free with how he creates and is never in a box defined by any particular sound or genre… He’s a creative genius, and I knew it from the day I tapped him in a session in a crowded room all those years ago. I could just hear it” Sami says of Brian.

“To me, it’s the truest and most classic R&B record on the EP, and it anchored the project to the authentic DNA of what speaks to me. I’m so proud of what we’ve created, and I feel as a genre we need to focus less on microwave short-form viral records and get back to our roots.”
